How to Choose the Right E-Bike Brake Pads
E-bike brake pads are small components with a major effect on stopping distance, noise and rider confidence. Choosing a replacement by appearance alone can lead to poor fit or uneven braking. Use this guide to identify the right pad, choose a suitable compound and know when replacement is due.
1. Identify your brake system
Start with the brand and model printed on the brake caliper or lever. Common e-bike systems include Tektro, TRP, Shimano, SRAM and NUTT. Two pads that look similar may use different backing-plate shapes, widths or retaining hardware.
Whenever possible, remove one existing pad and compare its outline with the replacement listing. Check the top tab, side curves, mounting hole and overall dimensions. If you own a Kasen bike, also confirm the bike model and production year because components can change between versions.
2. Choose the right pad compound
Organic or resin pads
Organic pads are usually quiet, offer smooth initial bite and work well for everyday street riding. They can wear faster under heavy loads, wet conditions or long descents.
Semi-metallic pads

Sintered metallic pads

3. Know when to replace brake pads
- The friction material is close to 1 mm thick or below the manufacturer’s limit.
- Braking requires more lever force than normal.
- You hear persistent grinding, scraping or metallic noise.
- The pads are contaminated with oil or brake fluid.
- Stopping performance remains weak after normal cleaning and adjustment.
Inspect both wheels because front and rear pads may wear at different rates. Never continue riding when the backing plate is contacting the rotor.
4. Check the rotor and hydraulic system
New pads cannot correct every braking problem. Inspect the rotor for deep scoring, discoloration, contamination or excessive wear. A soft lever can indicate air in a hydraulic line, while a damaged lever or motor cut-off sensor may require replacement. 5. Bed in new brake pads
After installation, perform a controlled bedding procedure in a safe, traffic-free area. Accelerate moderately and brake firmly without coming to a complete stop. Repeat several times so an even layer of pad material transfers to the rotor. Follow the brake manufacturer’s instructions and avoid touching the braking surfaces.
