How to Install a Surfboard Rack on an E-Bike Safely
A surfboard rack can turn an e-bike into practical beach transportation, but only when the mounting points, board position, and clearances are checked carefully. This guide explains how to install a two-arm universal surfboard rack without trapping cables, interfering with the wheels, or creating an unstable load.
The Kasen Universal Mount Surfboard Rack for E-Bikes uses two independent padded mounts and is listed for round mounting tubes from 7/8 inch to 1.25 inches (22–31.5 mm). Measure before installation—“universal” does not mean it fits every tube or every frame position.
Before You Install the Surfboard Rack
Turn the e-bike off and support it securely on level ground. Remove the battery if your bike manufacturer recommends doing so during accessory installation. Confirm that both padded carrier arms, both mounting clamps, the retaining straps or cords, and all supplied fasteners are present and undamaged.
Inspect the potential mounting areas. Do not clamp over:
- Brake hoses, shift cables, or electrical wiring
- Frame joints, welds, decals, or damaged paint
- The battery, battery rail, or charging port
- Carbon-fiber tubes unless the bicycle manufacturer approves clamping there
The selected tube must be round, strong, and within the rack’s stated 22–31.5 mm range. If the tube is larger, smaller, oval, or irregularly shaped, do not force the clamp to fit.
How to Install a Surfboard Rack on an E-Bike
1. Choose Two Mounting Locations
Hold the two rack arms against the same side of the bicycle. Place one toward the front and one toward the rear, with enough distance between them to support the board at two separated points. The padded U-shaped cradles should sit approximately parallel when viewed from above.
Before tightening either clamp, turn the handlebar fully left and right. Check that the arms cannot touch the tires, pedals, crank, chain, suspension, rider’s legs, or steering controls. On an e-bike, pay special attention to display, throttle, brake-sensor, and motor cables.
2. Attach the First Clamp
Open the first clamp and position any supplied protective insert or pad between the clamp and the bicycle tube. Close the clamp around the tube. Tighten the hand knob or supplied fastener evenly until the clamp cannot rotate by hand.
Do not add extra leverage or use an assumed torque value. The clamp needs to resist movement without crushing or deforming the bicycle tube. If it reaches the end of its adjustment before becoming secure, the mounting location is not compatible.
3. Attach and Align the Second Arm
Install the second clamp using the same method. Keep both carrier arms on the same side of the bicycle and align the padded cradles. Step back and compare their height and angle. The surfboard should rest across both supports rather than loading one arm more heavily than the other.
Push and pull each empty arm firmly. If a clamp slips or rotates, reposition it or correct the fit before loading the board.
4. Load the Surfboard
Lift the surfboard into both padded cradles while another person steadies the bicycle. Center the board between the supports and adjust it so the weight is balanced. Keep the nose, tail, fins, and leash away from the ground, rider, wheels, and drivetrain.
The Kasen rack listing states support for surfboards up to 9 feet long and 30 pounds. Treat those figures as maximums, not targets. A board may still be unsuitable if its shape, width, fins, or weight distribution prevents secure positioning.
5. Secure Both Retaining Straps
Pull each retaining strap or cord over the board and connect it to its matching anchor point. The board should sit firmly against the padded cradles without being crushed. Secure or remove the surf leash so it cannot enter a wheel.
Try to lift and slide the board by hand. It should not bounce out of a cradle or move forward and backward. Never rely on balance alone—the board must be retained at both rack arms.
Clearance and Safety Check
With the board installed, complete this checklist before riding:
- Both mounting clamps are tight and cannot rotate.
- Both retaining straps are engaged and properly tensioned.
- The handlebar turns fully in both directions.
- The pedals, crank, chain, and both wheels move freely.
- No cable, hose, wire, strap, or leash can contact a tire.
- The board does not block required lights or reflectors.
- The rider can mount, pedal, steer, and dismount without contacting the board.
Walk the loaded bicycle first. Then perform a short, low-speed test in a traffic-free area. Stop immediately if the rack moves, the board shifts, steering feels unstable, or the load contacts any moving component.
Tips for Riding With a Surfboard
A side-mounted board makes the bicycle wider and gives wind more surface area to push against. Ride slowly, allow extra clearance from vehicles and obstacles, and avoid strong winds, rough roads, sudden turns, and hard braking. Recheck the clamps and straps after the first short ride and before every later trip.
Remove the rack if a clamp, arm, pad, or retaining strap becomes bent, cracked, loose, or worn. Never carry a passenger or additional cargo if it interferes with the surfboard rack or exceeds the bicycle’s permitted load.
Choose the Correct Rack for Your E-Bike
Successful installation starts with compatible mounting points. Measure the intended tubes, inspect the cable routing, and check the board’s size before ordering. The Universal Mount Surfboard Rack for E-Bikes is designed for compatible 22–31.5 mm round tubes and uses independent padded supports for positioning flexibility.
